In Fabric: The Art of Place
From face value Manchester may appear to be an inclusive community, but to what extent truly is it? Are certain things overlooked? Is Manchester more focused on the aesthetics than making the space safe and practical for everybody? In a survey, only 54% of people thought those with disabilities were fairly represented in their workplace in Manchester. On the Skyliner tour, the lack of seating and safe spaces for the homeless and those with disabilities was very apparent to all of us, a finding that would shape our concept. Our installation was a functional seat that also held a strong message about inclusivity within the way it is designed and made. As a group, we utilised skills from our varying disciplines to create a project that blends both digital and physical work including virtual reality, modelling and fabric surface work. To carry our concept of inclusion forward into the display itself, we wanted to touch into the digital world further, by making a virtual exhibition through QR codes which can be viewed anywhere across the world from wherever you are. This displays our sample collection in addition to our seating
